I was the first person @ this Post Office branch to get the Marion Anderson stamps that came out today.

I was there partially to inquire about the stamps commemorating the sit-in movement started here in Greensboro 45 years ago this February.

Postage Stamp Will Portray Greensboro Sit-In
GREENSBORO — More than 40 years ago, black students were unwelcome guests at a Woolworth’s in downtown Greensboro. Now they’re being honored on the same spot as the U.S. Postal Service unveils a stamp that commemorates the lunch counter sit-in.

The stamp being unveiled next week is part of the 10-stamp collection called “To Form A More Perfect Union.” It salutes historic events in the civil rights movement.

The sit-in stamp portrays a sculpture created for the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tenn. The sculpture doesn’t portray any specific individual, but the postal service said the stamp represents the 1960 Greensboro sit-in and all the lunch counter protests that followed.

The ceremony will be held at the former Woolworth’s, where the store’s facade is being restored to its 1960 appearance. It eventually will reopen as a civil rights center and museum.
