I have to check my TV watching habits. the same channels come around the dial much faster now. Gilmore Girls was on again as I was working. The thing that I’ve pinned down is while I recognize that the writing is well done, it’s not natural. Not with the people who i converse with. at least not in every exchange. I see theres a snappy banter, but where 4 people are in the room speaking with the rhythmic precision of a verbal stepshow, or an acrobat juggling phrases, that to me isn’t realistic. and i realize i speak from the world of a cynical black man. But these people talk like they each had 5 cups of coffee and the building was on fire, and they had to get their points across.
i’m not bashing, i’m just vocally observing
You are so RIGHT! That’s why I could never get into that show. Plus I don’t have a mother/daughter relationship like theirs with my mother, so I can not relate. If my ma caught me in the bed with a dude…she would have beaten me to death!
Couldn’t have said it better myself. I also concur with tashie, I can’t relate to that type of mother/daugther relationship.
I watched the show religiously for a long time, but lately I don’t have time for it. The dialogue reminds me of the “snappy banter” that Hollywood created in the 30s and 40s, and sometimes I actually enjoy it. Lately, though, it gives me a headache. Maybe it’s just not conducive to studying.
The Gilmore Girls is one of the last remaining well-written shows left on television. They do talk fast but with the timing their humor requires … slow just would not cut it. The rhythm reminds me of Frasier with two cups of espresso. The relationship between rorie and lorelei is a sharp contrast to the relationship between lorelei and emily which is a contrast to Ms. kim and Lane. So no matter what a person’s mom/daughter relationship is there is some representation of it within the storyline…if not the two main characters. I don’t personally relate to the rorie/lorelei deal as much as I do to the lorelei/emily. The show has great writing, natural twists in the plots, and redefines the word family (because the community of Star’s Hollow is a family like no other) to mean the variety of things/forms it takes in the 21st century. Give the show a chance guys…
my mom says that show gives her a headache. i watch it whenever i can. my mom and i had that kind of relationship since i was 15 she’s been more of a friend/mother. the entertainment value of the show for me is in trying to catch all the quick little witty comments in EVERY characters 20 second rant. Everybody rants at least once on every episode. if anything, they get points for memorizing all those pages of lines. your post is so dead on.
I tried responding to your first Gilmore Girls entry but failed…Perhaps this one will work.
I discovered the show several years ago when I was living in a non-cable situation and was forced into WB viewing. (LOL).
The show is so delicious, so rambling, so witty, so quirky, so unique, so– you get the point– that I CANNOT stop watching it. We’re talking reruns here. Eyeing the DVD’s from season 1 thru present. I love Luke & Lorelai’s relationship from day one.
In comparison to so many awful “black” shows — which, by the way, I can’t relate to most of those, either!– “GG” is all that. I love good sitcom writing. It’s not always about “relating”, is it? After all, who can “relate” to “Lord of the Rings” or “Harry Potter” or most of the wicked shows on TV today?
Entertainment value here.
