if i already have a 4 port LAN router and want to at the very least give internet access to a wireless laptop. Can I do it without having to replace my router?
anyone? anyone?
I don’t trust anyone who’s in the position to try to sell me something i don’t need (don’t start). I started to go to CompUSA then I heard about one of those Colesium computer shows in town today, but that seemed like too easy an opportunity to get stuck with something I couldn’t return.
Theoretically, yes you can. It will require a wireless router. Plug one network cable from PORT 4 on the already existing router into the WAN port of the wireless router. This avoids confusion with other IPs being assigned dynamically by the existing router. The wireless router is acting like a regular hub, except its not. Assign the laptop an IP address from the wireless router.
Example: Let’s say you’re IP range on the existing router is 192.168.1.100 – 192.168.1.103. When plugging in the wireless router, it will be assigned 192.168.1.103, and will assign IP addresses above that, 192.168.1.104 – 192.168.1.107.
Worse-Case: Linksys makes a wireless 4-port router that also allows cable-based networking. (http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=35&prid=544)
Good Luck,
