was the whole “Al Green getting doused by hot grits” thing an urban legend?
and if not, was that before or after he wrote Let’s Stay Together?

It’s true. It happened after “Let’s Stay Together”. I remember when it happened and when the story was in Jet magazine. Shortly after that, Al quit singing, and when he came back, he was singing gospel.
The question is where did the hot grits land. Maybe that is why he started singing gospel.
i heard he was sitting in the tub when it happened. harsh!
