friday night my goal was to get j’s laptop to access my network. her internet connection was unreliable and printer access kaput since I upgraded my Operating System.
I had gotten a wireless network card but would upgrade her O/S to mine before I did any hardware changes. I backed up her emails, contacts and documents to a share folder.
I had blown away her drive when I ran into a glitch with the new O/S install. it wouldn’t let me copy files once it got to a certain point. I IM’d my tech-savvier-coworker M for tech-support. Retried the process. Three times. panic and frustration set in. it was not going to happen.
j is going to kill me.
at that time of night I had no other choice but to reinstall the old O/S, and get a lot drivers and reinstall the major applications needed. I decided to install the wireless card anyway and after some configuration, established internet access. I restablished email connectivity and restored the backed up email and data. it was 4 AM when i got to bed. Even though my machines can see hers she can’t see mine, on the network.
I felt success in being able to get her back on line and there were some glitchy things with her old setup that seemed to be taken care of with the reinstallation of the old O/S
the next day as j was surfing, she looks at me and says: You didn’t save my favorites.
