Today I helped the Obama campaign by canvassing voters. It was rainy but I was determined I rocked this shirt I designed. The play on words is OMIT ROMNEY, get it?
Unfortunately in the area around canvassing I came to realize that some people saw the shirt what it initially look like at face value and I got a lot of side eyes and hard stares and just cold shoulder.
After that I identified myself as working with the Obama campaign and explain the shirt.
I told my wife about my experiences and she had her own cold shoulders with her wearing her shirt.
When we explain what the shirt meant everyone went “Oh!”
The moral of the story is subtlety and politics do not mix
Side note: the people who didn’t notice the shirt, the ones who let me into their homes, for a small moment I felt a connection with them and it made me proud to contribute to a movement. I have a lot of respect for the people who have given hours, days, weeks, months and lives for their causes.
